Young cricket captains have often etched their names in the history books by leading their teams to memorable victories at remarkably young ages. From Test cricket to ODIs and T20s, these youthful leaders have proved their tactical acumen and ability to inspire teams under pressure, securing wins and setting records that defy their age. Here are some youngest captains to secure wins in different cricket formats:
Test Cricket
Rashid Khan of Afghanistan became the youngest captain to lead and win a Test match at 20 years and 350 days old, achieving this in September 2019. He led Afghanistan to their first-ever Test overseas win during his maiden test as captain. (Other notable young Test captains who secured wins include Tatenda Taibu at 20 years, 358 days and Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi at 21 years, 77 days).
Youngest Indian Test Captain to Win:
Sachin Tendulkar holds the record as the youngest Indian captain to win a Test match at the age of 23 years and 174 days. This feat was accomplished against Australia in 1996. While he was one of the youngest Indian captains overall (captaining at 23 years and 169 days in his first Test as captain), the age of 23 years and 174 days marks his youngest winning captaincy in Tests. Despite a relatively short and mixed captaincy career, this achievement remains a notable record in Indian Test cricket history.
ICC Cricket World Cup (50-over)
Kapil Dev was indeed the youngest captain to win the Cricket World Cup, lifting the trophy in 1983 at the age of 24 years and 170 days. He led India to a historic victory over the West Indies, becoming the first Indian captain to win the World Cup and remaining the youngest captain to win the title for any team to date.
T20 World Cup
The youngest captain to win the ICC T20 World Cup was Mahendra Singh Dhoni of India, who achieved this feat at the age of 26 years and 79 days in the inaugural tournament in 2007. Dhoni led India to victory in a memorable final against Pakistan, marking the start of his era as a successful Indian captain in limited-overs cricket.
Jacob Bethell becomes Youngest captain in England’s
Jacob Bethell became England’s youngest-ever men’s cricket captain to secure a victory at the age of 21 years and 329 days. He made history by captaining England to a four-wicket win over Ireland in the first T20 International of their three-match series in Dublin on September 17, 2025. This broke a 136-year-old record previously held by Monty Bowden, who captained England at age 23 in 1889. In his debut as captain, Bethell led a young England squad to chase down Ireland’s total of 196 with notable performances from opener Phil Salt and Jos Buttler, securing the win with 14 balls to spare.
